Mastering Your AI Interview: 10 Tips for Success

In today’s digital age, video interviews have become a crucial part of the job application process. During the pandemic, many companies shifted to online platforms and this trend continues, as we return to in-person workplaces and interactions.

Are you job hunting? You might have noticed more AI-led interviews as part of the hiring process. Resume Builder reports that by 2024, 43% of companies will use AI in interviews. If you haven’t had one yet, don’t stress. AI-led interviews are just like traditional in-person interviews but with some high-tech additions.

There are two types of AI platforms: assessments and chatbots. AI assessments evaluate candidates through video interviews, detecting and analyzing verbal and nonverbal cues. Chatbots interact with candidates through guiding questions and tasks. Typically, these AI interviews serve as the initial screening for identifying potential candidates before recruiters engage with them directly.

We want you to feel confident and prepared for your next AI interview, so we’ve put together ten tips to help you succeed.

1. Familiarize yourself with the interview platform

Automated Video Interviews (AVIs) are quickly becoming the norm in remote job interviews. AVIs are AI-led interviews that use video recording and automated processes. AVIs offer flexibility, convenience, and efficiency in the initial screening process for both job seekers and organizations. So, how does an AVI work? It’s pretty simple. You will receive a set of predetermined questions via the interview platform and record your responses within a designated timeframe before submitting them for evaluation by AI algorithms or the hiring team.

2. Set your interview desk up for success

Find a comfortable spot for your interview. Have a clean and simple background. Position your video camera or laptop at eye level and maintain eye contact with the camera. Check that your internet connection, webcam, microphone, and required software are working properly. Consider doing a test call or interview beforehand to get familiar with everything and sort out any technical glitches in advance.

3. Dress to impress

Even though AI has no sense of fashion, it remains crucial to dress professionally. Your attire holds the same significance as it would in an in-person meeting. Dressing professionally showcases your dedication and respect for the interview process. Choose solid colors that work well on camera and keep jewelry minimal. Also, remember to dress appropriately for the lower half of your body, even for a video interview.

4. Prep yourself like a traditional in-person interview

Approach an AI interview with the same level of readiness and confidence as you would for a conventional in-person interview. Conduct research on the company, including its core values, mission statement, and the specific requirements outlined in the job description.

5. Practice active listening

Even in AI-led interviews, it is important to highlight your enthusiasm for the role and the company. Let your tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language project positive energy. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace, avoiding rushing or speaking too slowly. Keep your answers brief and concise, aiming for around three to four sentences. Above all, be authentic, honest, and genuine.

6. Pay attention to your non-verbal cues

Make a conscious effort to make eye contact, maintain a pleasant yet engaged facial expression, and use subtle and purposeful hand gestures to emphasize your points. Be mindful of your overall body language, sitting comfortably but with an upright posture.

7. Reference relevant keywords

Thoroughly research the company and the job description to understand their pain points. When incorporating relevant keywords in an AI-led interview, ensure that they are seamlessly integrated into your responses, flowing naturally and aligning with the content you provide. Use measurable results to convey the impact you had in your previous organization, finding a balance between optimizing your answers with keywords and delivering genuine, meaningful responses.

8. Emphasize your soft skills

Highlight not only your technical qualifications but also your soft skills during the AI-led interview process. Soft skills encompass attributes such as effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability. Remember, hard skills may get you the interview, but soft skills will get you the job.

9. Manage your time

While most companies provide multiple attempts for recording interview responses, limit yourself to three tries. Set aside enough time for practice before hitting the record button to get comfortable and confident. Taking this approach will help you make the most of your opportunity and increase your chances of nailing your interview.

10. Check your digital presence

Ensure that your social media accounts, especially LinkedIn, present a professional image. Update your information, display relevant skills and experiences, and remove any content that may be perceived negatively by employers. Try these tips on how to stand out to recruiters on LinkedIn.
