Our client is a fast growing, family owned convenience store and fuel station company in Indiana with over 50 years of history and a culture built around respect, relationships, and taking care of people. They are currently executing a $100M development plan and growing 2x faster than the state average. With three new stores ready to launch, six additional sites in evaluation, and multiple projects under construction, their growth is being limited by one thing. They need the right civil engineer to bring their engineering function in house and help them execute their vision. As they continue to scale, they are seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to become the foundation of their internal engineering practice and help shape the next phase of their growth.
Position Overview
This is a truly rare opportunity to join a high growth, family owned organization where your contributions will be immediately visible and impactful. As the first ever in house Civil Engineer at Family Express, you will not just be filling a role. You will be building an entire engineering practice from the ground up. With direct access to company leadership and the VP of Development, this role offers the chance to grow into a team leadership position as the company continues its ambitious development pipeline. Position Responsibilities
- Own civil engineering projects from conceptual design through construction documents, municipal approvals, and final execution
- Design, stamp, and submit civil drawings to municipalities and state agencies
- Develop and review site plans, grading and drainage, stormwater management, utility connections, and roadway access
- Coordinate subcontractors across structural, traffic, landscaping, and commercial septic disciplines
- Support site feasibility analysis and pre-construction due diligence including surveys, geotechnical reports, and environmental assessments
- Provide technical input for permit applications and partner with external engineering firms on regulatory submissions
- Serve as the internal engineering resource during construction, resolving design related field issues and reviewing RFIs and submittals
- Conduct site visits within Central and Northern Indiana to verify alignment with design intent
- Help select and manage outside engineering partners
- Work directly with the VP of Development, CEO, Construction Project Manager, architects, and external firms to drive site design and project execution
- Support the long term vision of building an internal engineering team
Position Qualifications
Required:
- Active PE license required
- 10+ years of commercial or retail site development experience
- Proven ability to self generate full civil construction documents from start to finish
- Strong experience with grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility design
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Experience obtaining permits from AHJs and Plan Commissions
- Start to finish project ownership mentality, no assembly line engineering
- Open to relocating to Indiana with full relocation assistance available
Preferred:
- Convenience store, fuel station, or carwash site development experience
- Bluebeam Revu proficiency
- Experience coordinating subcontractors across structural, traffic, landscaping, and septic disciplines
- Experience building or managing a small engineering team
- Background from a small to mid-sized boutique engineering firm
- Own your own firm or have a team you would bring with you
