Business Development Representative
Toronto, hybrid with two days per week onsite
Our client is a respected Canadian media and information company whose reporting has been trusted by the country’s leading brands for more than a century, and whose commercial team now sells a growing suite of solutions to public relations, marketing, and communications professionals. Alongside licensed news and branded content, they offer a media forecasting platform, an events calendar, and a media contacts database that help organizations earn coverage and stay ahead of emerging stories. The culture is small team, high transparency, and genuinely collaborative, with flexible hours, a pension, paid vacation, and health, dental, and vision coverage. As they enter a new era of growth, they are looking for a Business Development Representative to build the pipeline that will carry that growth forward.
Position Overview
This is a role for someone who wants their work measured by what it produces, not by how busy it looks. You will own the top of the funnel for a well known brand that opens doors, which means the conversation starts warmer than most, and your job is to make sure the meetings you book turn into real opportunities. Compensation reflects that: a competitive base salary covers the meetings, a bonus rewards genuinely qualified opportunities, and you participate in the revenue when those opportunities close. You will work directly with senior leadership and with account executives who will tell you honestly what is working, and you will have a full prospecting stack behind you, including Salesforce, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Apollo, and AI assisted outreach tooling that is waiting for the right person to put it to use. The team has a track record of promoting from within, and for a representative who performs, the path to an account executive seat is real and reasonably quick.
Position Responsibilities
- Build and convert a pipeline of qualified opportunities for the sales team, prioritizing quality of fit over volume of meetings booked.
- Research target accounts before reaching out, using signals such as press releases, company announcements, and leadership changes to identify organizations with a genuine need.
- Run consistent outbound activity, typically an email or LinkedIn message followed by a phone call, to secure meetings with communications, marketing, and public relations leaders at enterprise accounts, small and medium sized businesses, agencies, associations, government organizations, and not for profits.
- Qualify inbound and self sourced leads against clear criteria covering need, timing, budget, and decision making authority, and ask a few focused questions once a meeting is booked so the account executive arrives prepared.
- Maintain accurate, current records in Salesforce, including contacts, opportunity details, next steps, and meeting dates.
- Develop real depth in the product suite and the target market so you can tailor each pitch, differentiate the offering, and address objections with confidence.
- Collaborate with sales, marketing, customer service, and product teams by joining demos, building campaign lists, and sharing what you are hearing from the market.
Position Qualifications
Required:
- A demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding outbound activity and opportunity targets.
- A minimum of one year of experience as a business development or sales development representative, preferably in a B2B SaaS environment, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.
- Proven ability to generate meetings through a mix of cold calling, email, and LinkedIn outreach.
- Natural, confident verbal communication, meaning you can describe a service, surface a prospect’s problem, and ask the right questions without leaning on a script.
- Strong self management, organization, and follow through, with the discipline to own your daily activity in a hybrid setting.
Preferred:
- Experience working with or selling to public relations, marketing, and communications professionals, or a background in media.
- Verbal and written communication skills in French.
- Familiarity with Salesforce, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, or Apollo.
